JonBenét Ramsey Case: Where is Detective Steve Thomas Now

Date:

JonBenét Ramsey’s murder happened more than 25 years ago. It was a terrible crime that got national attention and became one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in American history. Steve Thomas, a former detective in Boulder, was one of the most important people in the investigation. Thomas spent two years trying to find the truth about the death of the 6-year-old beauty pageant queen, even though he had a background in drugs. He now lives a quiet life, very different from the attention-getting work he used to do.

JonBenét Ramsey, a beauty queen from Boulder, Colorado, who was six years old, was found dead in her family’s home on December 26, 1996. The shocking and mysterious ways she died shocked the whole country and are still one of the most famous unsolved crimes in American history.

Patsy Ramsey, JonBenét’s mother, called 911 the morning after Christmas to say that her daughter was missing and that a note demanding $118,000 had been found on the stairs. The note said that JonBenét had been taken, but things went horribly wrong when her father, John Ramsey, found her body in the basement later that same day.

The person who was found had her hands tied above her head, duct tape over her mouth, and a broken paintbrush handle around her neck as a garrote. There was evidence that she had been hit in the head and suffocated. The Boulder Police Department first thought it might have been the Ramsey family because of the strange ransom note, the fact that there were no signs of forced entry, and the fact that the crime scene was a mess. Many people, though, said that the investigation went wrong in many ways, such as tainting evidence and not properly handling the crime scene.

Living a Private Life in Florida

Steve Thomas quit the police force in August 1998 because he didn’t like how the Ramsey case was being handled. He called his time working for the district attorney’s office “fundamentally flawed” in his resignation letter because of the way they handled politics, professional conflicts, and poor management. Because of this, Thomas has changed careers and now works in real estate and lives in Florida. In an interview with Websleuths in 2023, he said, “I live a pretty anonymous life.”

Thomas stays in touch with former coworkers in law enforcement even though he is not a police officer anymore. He said that being a police officer was his “career calling” and that he was thankful for where his life has led him. Some people still think about the Ramsey case, though. He still has faith that justice will be done one day.

A Controversial Theory

Thomas became famous because he thought that JonBenét’s mother, Patsy Ramsey, was to blame for her daughter’s death. In his 2000 book, JonBenét: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation, he wrote more about his theory. Thomas says that Patsy Ramsey’s stress, which was caused by the holidays, her impending forty-first birthday, and a fight with Jon Benét over bedwetting, led to a terrible fight. He thought that JonBenét lost consciousness because of a head injury he got in a fight in the bathroom. Because she was scared, Patsy allegedly set up a kidnapping by tying JonBenét’s hands and writing a ransom note.

This theory is still controversial, and there is no evidence to support it. In 2008, DNA tests proved that both Patsy and John Ramsey were not guilty. They always said they were innocent. Patsy Ramsey died in 2006 of ovarian cancer, which left a lot of questions.

Thomas quit the Boulder Police Department

The main reason Thomas quit the Boulder Police Department was that he didn’t like the way the investigation was going. In 2000, he said on Larry King Live, “I quit because I thought it had turned into such a mess and was going nowhere.” He broke down in tears and lost faith in the badge because of the attention from the public and his own problems.

During the same interview, JonBenét’s dad, John Ramsey, spoke out against Thomas in public, saying that he wasn’t doing his job as a police officer. Thomas stuck to his decision, even though there was backlash. He stressed that he wanted justice and an end to the case.

A Quiet Advocate for Justice

Thomas now lives a quiet life, but he still keeps up with what’s going on in the Ramsey case. During a 2022 Websleuths livestream, he said again that he thought the truth might come out in the end. He said, “People just don’t know what to believe.” “I’m still hoping that this case will be finally over one day.”

Steve Thomas is now out of the public eye and focusing on his work and personal life. But because he was involved in one of the most mysterious murder cases in U.S. history, his name will always be linked to the search for answers in the sad story of JonBenét Ramsey.
